THE ORIGINS:
The genesis of the modern-day Goshen Art League (GAL) was a group of five women who attended art classes together at the Goshen Central School District’s Adult Education Division. In 1953, the five mounted their first show in the window of the periodical Goshen Independent Republican, which was referred to as Indy’s Window.
It wasn’t until 1961 that the Goshen Art Group, as GAL was then known, was officially formed. The organization then consisted of a workshop group and a civic membership, with the original membership comprising of 18 artists and ten civic members. At that time membership dues were one dollar per year.
In those days the enthusiastic workshop group met every Monday evening at the Main Street School with a focus not just on the workshops but also on exploring ways to promote art appreciation among the community.
The Group joined the Orange County Art Federation and held shows at the Hall of Fame of the Trotters, the Ski Lodge, and Country Store. Members also exhibited in sidewalk shows, local banks, and at other area businesses willing to support and promote the visual arts.
THE MISSION:
While the Goshen Art League continues to expand its ranks and explores new and innovative programs, the mission at its core remains the same as the original:
To provide members opportunities to exhibit their work, to allow members to offer workshops and demonstrations, and to provide public awareness of the artists in our community.
THE PRESENT:
The Goshen Art Group eventually became the Goshen Art League and has continued to grow and evolve through the years. At present there are over 75 members, mostly visual artists, who continue to successfully show and sell their work in many similar venues as their original counterparts, including eateries, banks, health care facilities, and Goshen Town Hall, among others. The sidewalk art shows have transformed into the highly successful Goshen Art Walk, founded and sponsored by the Village of Goshen and administered by the League.
THE FUTURE:
In 2016, the League celebrated 55 years as an arts organization and is eager to explore additional art disciplines and to expand its ranks to include more and diverse artists from throughout the region.
In these exciting times and into the future, the Goshen Art League enthusiastically seeks opportunities - not only within our own community, but also beyond our borders - to showcase and promote Goshen as a destination for encountering, purchasing, engaging with and enjoying fine art.
